Since the early 1950s, Ellsworth Kelly has worked with austere geometry and pure color in his minimalist sculptures, paintings, and prints. Although his art has been uncompromisingly abstract, he has generally taken inspiration for his forms directly from nature and the observable world. With his drawings and lithographs of simple plants and fruits, the artist has sought to distill the essence of these forms with pure line and shape. Kelly produced his first plant lithographs in the 1960s and he has repeatedly revisited the subject matter over the course of his career.
