The cold cut coasters stemmed from the study of custom composite material. They are constructed from fishnet, fabric, wood, rope, game pieces, epoxy clay, urethane resin, and anything else they may find in their neighborhood. When combined on the wooden 'bone,' the wrapped bundle of compressed materials resembles a ham hock and is then sliced into coasters.
Chinese-born Chen Chen and native New Yorker Kai Williams have been combining their creative talents since 2011, when they launched their Brooklyn studio. Both graduates of Pratt Institute, they share a curious interest in displacing everyday materials from their customary environments.
