Collection: Designers: Ettore Sottsass
Ettore Sottsass (1917–2007), an influential Italian architect and designer, emerged as the godfather of Italian design. Born in Austria and raised in Milan, Sottsass endured the challenges of World War II, spending a significant part in a Yugoslavian concentration camp. Returning to Milan, he established his architectural and industrial design studio. Hired by Olivetti in 1958, he served as a design consultant for over two decades, crafting iconic pieces like the Elea 9003 computer and the red Valentine portable typewriter. Departing from pure functionalism, Sottsass delved into postmodernist design, infusing social and historical elements into his creations, ultimately becoming a leading figure in the Anti-Design movement.
In 1981, he spearheaded the groundbreaking Memphis group, redefining design norms with vibrant colors, varied media, and unconventional materials. Beyond Memphis, Sottsass challenged conventions, founding Sottsass Associati and engaging in large-scale designs. His legacy endures through retrospectives at esteemed institutions worldwide, and he received numerous accolades, including the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, honorary degrees, and awards recognizing his profound impact on design.
