Frank Big Bear creates intricate, colorful collages, paintings, and drawings that vibrate with energy. This print represents a selection from a larger work—The Walker Collage, Multiverse #10—created for the newly renovated entrance of the Walker. For that collage (on view beginning November 6), the artist combed hundreds of books and magazines and cut out thousands of images, focusing on space, time, culture, history, art, science, and people. The work is at once a microcosmic view of life on Earth and a personal endeavor; the artist interspersed family photos and photo corners, which might evoke a family album. The piece is also dedicated to Big Bear’s late brother, the poet Joseph E. Big Bear.
Frank Big Bear has presented solo exhibitions at the Tweed Museum, Duluth; Museum of Contemporary Native Arts, Santa Fe; and the Plains Art Museum, Fargo. His work is held in the collections of the Walker Art Center, the Minneapolis Institute of Art; the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian, Washington, DC; and the British Museum, London, among others. Big Bear was raised in Pine Point on the White Earth Reservation in Minnesota, spent several decades in Minneapolis, and currently lives and works in Duluth.
